Surdex Industries, as it was originally known, has been on the Victorian scene since 1952. The founder, Reg Geary and two employees started business at the back of the family dry-cleaning store.

The company grew steadily until 1988, when it then became part of the Southern Steel Group, Australia's most dynamic, independently owned steel distribution company. In Victoria, Surdex Steel has become one of Bluescope's largest distributors of coated steel,tubular products and structural steel, plate and merchant bar and the largest distributor of Bluescope Building Products' range, for all applications.

In December 1993 the company achieved quality accreditation to ISO9002, part of an elite group of Australian companies which achieve quality accreditation on the first audit.
